Senator Bill Stanley’s Statement on Independence Day

Senator Bill Stanley’s Statement on Independence Day

###
Glade Hill VA, 04 July 2011:

This weekend most of us take time to enjoy good food, good friends, family fun and fireworks. I hope you all take advantage of this time to welcome the vacation season, and make memories with friends and family that will last a lifetime.

July 4th, our nation’s Independence Day, is special. In 1776 the men gathered in Philadelphia were not planning cookouts, trips to the beach, or the pyrotechnic extravaganzas that we have become so accustomed to. They were planning to create a nation, founded on the true principles of liberty, and freedom, with the understanding that all men have rights granted directly from our Creator, and not dealt miserly to mankind by some small group of men in a distant capitol.

These great men we call the Founding Fathers understood the risks of such bold statements and actions. They placed their “lives, fortunes, and sacred honor” on the altar of freedom for all the generations that would follow them. Their understanding of how precious the principles of truth, justice, and individual liberty are, has allowed us the blessings of living in this free land, and has given hope to all those who still remain under the oppression of tyrants.

It is for each of us to dedicate our focus, as did the Founders, on the preservation of liberty so as to ensure that we pass on to future generations the blessings of the freedom we enjoy in this great nation.

I hope we all take some time to reflect on what we have as Americans.

Fine words, Bill, and most appropriate for today. And I remember all those patriots, men and women of our armed forces, who are serving our country in distant lands. I wish them Godspeed and hope they come home safely and soon. Have a wonderful Independence Day.
